Face Lift Surgery

A facelift or rhytidectomy is a surgical procedure that improves visible signs of aging on the face and neck, such as:

Loosening of facial skin causes sagging

Deepening of the fold lines between the corner of the nose and mouth

 Falling or lost oil

jowl that develops on the cheeks and chin

Loose skin and excess fat on the neck that can look like a jowl or "turkey neck"

The loss of youthful lines on the face can be caused by various factors such as thinning of the skin, loss of facial fat, gravity, sun damage, smoking, heredity and stress.

Other procedures that can be applied in conjunction with a facelift are eyebrow lifting and eyelid surgery to rejuvenate aging eyes.  Fat transfer or fillers may be recommended to replace the lost fat volume.  Skin treatments such as IPL, dermabrasion, peeling or laser may be recommended to improve the quality and texture of the skin.

 How is Face Lift Performed?

The technique a cosmetic surgeon uses during a facelift depends on a number of factors, including the patient's anatomy and personal goals, the extent of the facelift (mini or standard), and whether another procedure is performed at the same time.  .  Facelifts are typically performed using general anesthesia, although some less extensive procedures may use local anesthesia with sedation.

After the first incisions are made, the skin is separated from the underlying connective tissue and muscles.  This allows the plastic surgeon to reposition deeper facial tissues, get rid of jowls and create a firmer foundation for the skin.  Excess skin is then removed and the remaining skin is gently laid back onto the regenerated facial tissues, giving the face a smoother, younger contour without over-stretching the skin.

 After Face Lift Surgery

A facelift is a complex procedure that requires exceptional surgical skill, but the healing process is surprisingly fast for most patients.  Patients return to their normal daily activities approximately 2 weeks after a standard facelift (intense exercise should wait about 4 weeks), and these timeframes are normally even shorter after a mini facelift.  Because each patient heals slightly differently, your cosmetic surgeon will give you detailed instructions for aftercare and return to activity.

One of the primary concerns for patients after facelift surgery is how soon they will look normal after the procedures, and understandably – unlike a breast or body procedure, for example, you cannot easily cover the area with clothing.  Bruising and swelling are normal after facelift surgery and peak around 2 days after surgery.  After that, the bruising and swelling will gradually improve and will be hard to notice after about 10 to 14 days.  Still, many patients feel comfortable going out in public about a week or so after their procedure.
